The Stayner Siskins are leading the Provincial Junior Hockey League North Conference championship series 3-2 over the Mitchell Hawks after Game Five of the series on Sunday, May 1, in Mitchell.
The Siskins took an early lead delivering a devastating 8-0 win in game one of the series.
The Hawks fought back taking game two by a score of 3-2. They went to take a lead with a 4-3 win in game three of the series.
Stayner tied the series in Game Four on April 30, with a 4-2 win on Siskins home ice.
The game was tied at two midway in the third period when Stayner scored to take the lead then got a second goal for some insurance with just over a minute remaining on the clock.
Game Five got underway on Mitchell home ice. Stayner picked on the only first period goal at the midway mark, then scored again in the second frame.
Mitchell got on the scoreboard with 21 second left on the clock in the second period, but that’s all they could do for the night.
Stayner wrapped it up with goal number three with 30 seconds left in the final period for the 3-1 win.
The Siskins can wrap up the series with a win in game six.
That game was scheduled for Tuesday, May 3, in Stayner, with results not available at press time.
In other conference championship series, the Grimsby Peach Kings have eliminated the New Hamburg Firebirds in a series that went six games.
The Lakeshore Canadiens won their series with the North Middlesex Stars in four games.
The Clarington Eagles knocked out the Napanee Raiders in a series that went five games.
Conference championship teams will go on to compete in the Junior Schmalz Cup provincial championship tournament.
The semi-finals and final game will be played at the University of Guelph with the championship game taking place on May 15.
