The Tottenham Steam took an early lead in their Saturday (Nov. 5) night home game against the Oshawa RiverKings and managed to stay ahead for a 6-4 win.
The Steam took the lead in the first period when Hayden Way scored just 33 seconds into the game.
Viacheslav Chegrintcev scored just under two minutes later to give the squad a 2-0 lead.
The RiverKings got on the scored board early on a single that made it a 2-1 game to end the first frame.
It wasn’t an easy start to Saturday’s game. The Steam were six minutes in minor penalties and two 10-minute misconducts in the first period.
Oshawa took four minutes in penalties and also received a 10-minute misconduct.
The Steam outscored the RiverKings 3-2 in the second period starting with an early goal from Dmitri Russu.
Russu scored his second of the game at the midway mark, then followed up with the hat trick when he scored a power play goal to give the Tottenham squad a 5-2 lead with one period remaining.
The Oshawa team fought back in the second period scoring two but a final short-handed goal from Viacheslav Chegrintcev made it a 6-4 game for the Steam.
It was a much needed win for the Steam who have struggled with their line-up for most of the season. After signing on some new players the squad is now working to put more games in the win column.
The Steam will be on the road this weekend travelling to Toronto to take on the Predators on Saturday (Nov. 12) night.
They will return to home ice at the Tottenham Community Centre on Saturday, Nov. 19, to face the Northumberland Stars. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
