Your retail book purchases at Chapters Newmarket could help Tecumseth Beeton Elementary School
The local school has been named as a participant in the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation’s 11th annual Adopt a School Program, which aims to raise one book for every student.
Running now through October 6, the program fundraises for local “high-needs” elementary school libraries across the country, with 100 per cent of funds donated directly to schools.
“A lifelong love of reading and educational success is possible for every Canadian child,” said Heather
Reisman, Chair of the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation. “However, we face a significant challenge with the
funding of public elementary school libraries across Canada where small or nonexistent library budgets are
the reality. The burden is unfairly falling on our teachers who are putting their hands into their own pockets
to buy books and educational resources for their classrooms. We as a country need to do better to ensure
that all students become engaged readers.”
There are many ways to get involved in helping Tecumseth Beeton Elementary School make it count.
During the program, the local store – in this case, the Chapters location at Yonge Street and Davis Drive in Newmarket – will collect in-store donations. All participating schools receive the funds as e-gift carts to support the “rejuvenation” of their library and benefit from a 30 per cent discount off books at Chapters, Indigo and Coles when using program donations.
New this year is book registry matching where each school can select 50 books they want to add to their school library. During the program, community supporters can purchase books from each participating school’s gift registry at indigo.ca and Indigo will then match the donation with an additional copy of each book purchased.
