Local business people had a chance to meet with members of New Tecumseth Town Council during an informal social held at Woodington Lake Golf & Country Club on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

The event was sponsored by the Tottenham & Beeton District Chamber of Commerce (TBDCC).

In keeping with the policy regarding council interaction, the meeting was held strictly as a chance to get to know people in their wards, and no council business was discussed.

Each councillor, the deputy mayor, and mayor had the opportunity to address the audience and provide information about themselves for residents who don’t already know them.

“This is a chamber member exclusive event,” explained TBDCC president, Robyn Caruana. “We (the TBDCC) didn’t engage in a debate or ‘meet the candidate’ meeting before the election. We did have directors on our board as well as people that sit at our meetings that were running in the election, so this year we didn’t engage in anything pre-election.”

The TBDCC wanted to avoid any kind of unnecessary conflict of interest.

“Not everybody knows the councillors like we do because we speak to them all the time,” Ms. Caruana explained. “This is an opportunity to see the real person behind the name and see that they are approachable. It’s an opportunity for members to meet their new council, but also for council to meet some of our members. It gives them an opportunity to also learn about the chamber and what we do, and learn some more about members. It is to show that these are real people, they’re happy to talk to you and happy to listen. They’re your voice.”

As several of the councillors are entering their first term, the evening provided local business people with the chance to meet those responsible for representing them at the municipal level.
