Teen charged with first-degree murder involving newborn

The Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police has arrested and charged an individual in connection with a suspicious death investigation in New Tecumseth.

The death has been ruled a homicide.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., on Nov. 21, 2024, police discovered the body of a deceased newborn in a residence in Alliston.

As a result of an investigation, a 16-year-old from New Tecumseth was arrested on Jan. 15. They were charged with First Degree Murder and Indignity to a Dead Body.

The accused remains in custody and was scheduled to virtually appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on Jan. 16 to answer to the charges.

As the accused is a minor, no names have been released.

The Nottawasaga OPP Crime Unit is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from OPP Forensic Identification Services, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
