It was a chance to find some quality baked goods while helping local good causes when Toonies for New Tecumseth held its first fundraiser at the Tottenham Legion on Saturday, April 27.
Organizer Eva Bradley, who started the initiative in February with the help of her friend, Chrystal Robertson, has a long history of raising funds for local good causes and this time she is raising money in support of the Tottenham Food Bank and S.H.I.F.T. in Alliston.
The bake sale was the first event that was held, although online giving has been available since the start of the project.
In addition to the bake sale, the event featured a raffle and silent auction.
Eva had several volunteers that helped out as well as 13 bakers who contributed to the sale.
“Today we are fundraising for the Food Bank and so we can do a donation to S.H.I.F.T. in Alliston,” Eva explained. “We had 13 people baking, plus myself. We’re having a bake sale, a raffle and silent auction. I started in February with donations and e-transfers, but this our first big fundraiser.”
There was good response at the bake sale with a steady stream of people arriving all day long.
“We had a beautiful response today,” Eva said. “I thank everybody that came and bought our baking. I appreciated it very much. I made 60 banana breads, 120 Hungarian cookies and 80 shortbreads, along with the 300 items everyone else baked.”
The raffle features gift baskets with a variety of different items.
Eva hopes local residents will take part and help her raise the funds for these two local good causes. She likes to remind people how much could be raised if every household in New Tecumseth donated just one Toonie.
The goal for the initiative is to raise $10,000.
There are two more events coming up.
On May 25, Toonies for New Tecumseth will be at the Beeton Honey Festival. On July 6, they will be at the Tottenham Street Festival.
