Tottenham Legion celebrates reopening after renovations

The Tottenham Legion Branch 329 celebrated its reopening on Thursday, Sept. 10, after renovations that both refreshed the building and made it more accessible.

An Ontario Trillium Foundation grant of $193,700 made the renovations possible.

The renovations included new floors on both the lower and upper levels, new handicap washrooms, new ceilings, and painting.

Older floors in the building had developed some spots that were uneven, making it difficult for someone with mobility issues to move around. The new floors have created a safer space for members and visitors.

The Tottenham Legion is a local hub of activity which supports veterans as well as many local sports groups and causes.

Executive assistant and manager of constituency initiatives, Cathy Law, on behalf of MPP Brian Saunderson’s office, was on hand at the reopening to present the official declaration of the Trillium grant.

“I offer congratulations to your organization on receiving the grant,” Law said. 

“This grant will be used to improve accessibility throughout the legion by renovating washrooms, replacing flooring and lighting, and installing new doors.”

Visitors were invited to tour the building and see the completed renovations.

“We are here to celebrate the official reopening of the branch, and we want to thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for giving us the opportunity to improve the branch,” said Gord Robertson, branch first vice. 

“As you have seen, the improvements are remarkable. They make our legion more welcoming, open, and handicapped accessible. The mission of the Ontario Trillium Foundation is to build vibrant communities throughout Ontario by investing in community-based initiatives and strengthening the impact of the Ontario non-profit sector.”

New Tecumseth Mayor Richard Norcross attended the reopening and said the legion had a lot to celebrate.

“Just a few months ago we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the legion,” Mayor Norcross said. 

“For a century, the Tottenham Legion has been a pillar of our community where people can come together to build the community and honour the memory of those who have served.”
