While the restrictions of the past year and the current stay-at-home order has hammered some businesses hard, there is some silver lining in the clouds of despair for others.
Restaurants have closed, personal services businesses have shut down, and you can’t play a round of golf; however, you can still maintain your home.
Since many people have spent the last year working out of their home, it has given a lot of home owners the ability to turn their former commuting time into a few hours they can use to upgrade their home.
Garden centres and nurseries have been doing a booming business and home decorating stores have seen a huge increase in sales.
At Tottenham Paint and Paper, the renewed interest in home décor and maintenance has translated into an increase in business of around 40 per cent.
Store owner Susan Simon said the store has been so busy she has hired new people and has expanded to include a painting staff that does home painting.
“We’re classified as an essential service, based on construction,” explained Ms. Simon. “All the paint stores are open. People are staying at home and painting their houses. We are operating curbside only. Customers are calling in their orders or they come to the door if they need help. We ask a lot of questions so we can help them over the phone.”
With their experience, the staff are able to help customers select a type and shade of paint they are looking for.
Luckily for home owners, if you have already started a home renovation or construction project, you allowed to continue to get it finished. If you are planning a new project, you’ll have to wait to have contractors come to your home.
Ms. Simon said the fact that people are staying home means home owners are enjoying upgrading their homes.
“It’s due to people being at home and having nothing else to do. They can’t travel, they can’t go anywhere, so their bettering their homes. The gardening industry, the painting industry are all busy. Even our manufactures can’t keep up with the demand.”
While many businesses are really taking a hit during the stay-at-home order, home related business are benefiting from the fact that people are spending so much time at home.
“I’m hiring more people, which is wonderful, and keeping people employed,” Ms. Simon said. “I’m so blessed. Every day I thank a higher power, but at the same time I’m sad for the other businesses that can’t open.”
You can keep up with the news at Tottenham Paint and Paper on Facebook, and if you need decorating advice or home painting services, they are there to help.
