It’s going to snow sooner or later, and the Town of New Tecumseth will be plowing the roads once there is 8 cm of snow on the ground.

As a resident, there are things you can do to help facilitate snow removal this winter.

New Tecumseth’s Public Works Department performs all winter control operations for the town’s municipal roads, including plowing, sanding, salting, and clearing of sidewalks. Winter control operations help keep the community safe and running smoothly even when there are special weather events like heavy snowfall or ice storms.

The town works by a set of standards and due diligence to ensure the job gets done right. The standards include the frequency of plowing determined by the accumulated snow depth and time.

Roads are plowed based on a priority system with major roads both primary and secondary, plowed first, followed by local streets.

The town is responsible for clearing snow and ice from 775 km of roads, 87 km of sidewalks, and 15 parking lots.

During a winter event, you can use the ‘Track Your Plow’ app to show an image of a plow at its latest location where it is actively deployed and is plowing or spreading material. The map also shows areas as a Green trail – cleared within the last eight hours, a Yellow – cleared within the last eight to 16 hours, and Orange – cleared within the last 16 to 24 hours.

As a resident, you can help with snow plowing and removal by adhering to winter parking restrictions to make sure plows have a clear path, parking off-street during and after snow or ice storms, and clearing snow and ice from your property.

For weather-related emergencies, you can reach out to the Public Works Department after-hours for urgent concerns like downed trees on municipal roads and malfunctioning traffic signals.

The 24-hour emergency number is 877-274-0031.
