If you are having difficulties completing your tax forms this year, you may receive help from the United Way Simcoe Muskoka through their free and confidential tax clinics.
This free tax preparation service is offered to individuals and families, seniors, and persons with disabilities with low incomes, in partnership with the Canada Revenue Agency Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.
“Tax season can be difficult and tax preparation fees can be prohibitive to many,” said Brian Shelley, chief executive and philanthropy office, united Way Simcoe Muskoka. “By offering this service for free, we hope that we can help individuals access social benefits that they may be missing out on.”
To be eligible to participate in the program, you must be a resident of Essa Township or New Tecumseth and be within the total family income maximum based on family size.
Eligible people include a single person with an income of not more than $35,000, two people with a combined income of not more than $45,000, a three-person household with an income of not more than $47,000, or a four-person household with an income not exceeding $50,000.
Volunteers cannot help with tax returns for deceased persons, bankrupt individuals, capital gains or losses, employment expenses, or business or rental income and expenses.
Tax clinics will take place at four locations: New Tecumseth Public Library, Alliston branch, Essa Public Library, Angus branch, FOCUS Employment Services Alliston, and FOCUS Employment Services Angus.
