New Tecumseth’s overnight winter parking ban was lifted by Council at last Monday’s meeting as more people return to Town due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Ward 2 Councillor Michael Beattie made the motion to allow for the influx of people, particularly post-secondary school students, who may be returning to New Tecumseth as in-person classes have been cancelled across Ontario.

He said there will be a lot more community care and home care providers, personal support workers, and individuals who work in group homes, working, in some cases, all hours of the day, so the lifted parking restrictions might assist them as well.

“I think this would give an additional layer of comfort to residents and to those that have to work when most of us will be stepping back,” said Councillor Beattie.

He also said this would help Town staff, as they will have one less duty during a time when Town staffing levels are expected to reduce 25 to 50 percent through the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Prior to Councillor Beattie’s motion, the winter parking restrictions would have stayed in effect until April 15. The ban prohibited parking between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. on all Town streets.
