The Alliston Hornets won their second game of the season at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Friday night, September 23, when they hosted the Midland Flyers.

Midland scored the first goal of the night just two minutes into the first period.

The Hornets responded with a goal from Andrew Maltby at the midway mark, then took the lead on a goal from Jakob Power at the 15:43 mark into the period.

Alliston was ahead 5-1 early in the second period on two goals from Cole Turcotte scored 46 seconds apart, and a goal from Jacob Power 31 seconds later.

The Flyers notched their second goal of the night at just over seven minutes into the frame.

Connor Hiles and Parker Mills scored two more for the Hornets to make it a 7-2 game with one period remaining.

Alliston’s Mark Coish scored the only third period goal to end the game 8-2 for the Alliston win.

Hornets goalie Kevin Halloran played the full three periods and took 28 shots on net for the night.

“We talked to our guys a lot about building good habits, about playing a style that suits our roster, and we’re starting to figure that out,” said head coach Travis Chapman after the game. “In the first period I thought we did a really good job of pushing the pace, being aggressive, and forechecking, and that’s where we want to be. It was nice to see our guys get rewarded for that early in the game. Once the puck starts going in, everybody feels good about themselves.”

At three games into the season, it’s still too early to really determine how the season will go, but Chapman has a lot of confidence.

“For us, we’ve got a really young group of defencemen so it’s going to take them some time to get used to being junior hockey players,” Chapman said. “Early on, there will be some nights where it doesn’t look so good, and there will be nights when it does. We’ve only got two returning defencemen this year. This time of year it’s always about seeing if we can pick up the concepts of what we want to do as a team. But it looks like we’re starting to pick this and put it into action.”

The Hornets will be back on home ice on Wednesday, October 5, when they will host the Innisfil Spartans.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
