Lacrosse season in doubt: National championships already cancelled

June 10, 2021   ·   0 Comments

Lacrosse fans may have to wait another year to see their sport in action.

While no announcement has been made yet, it seems the likelihood of Junior level lacrosse having a season is evaporating.

Junior A and B leagues have been very quiet lately with no new announcements or news being given out.

No doubt league executives are doing what the rest of the sports world is doing and that is waiting to see how things play out.

If there is a good indicator of what might or might not happen, the recent announcement by Lacrosse Canada about championship cancellations seems to be setting the tone for this season.

The organization announced the cancellation of nine 2021 National Championships.

This includes the Founder’s Cup – the Junior B National Championship.

Other cancellations include the 12U, 14U, 14U girls, 17U, and 17U girls national championships.

In field lacrosse, the U15 boy’s field, U18 men’s field, and the senior men’s field national championships have all been cancelled for 2021.

A decision on the U19 women’s field national championships has been deferred.

There’s has been no decision yet about the Minto Cup – the Junior A national championship or the Mann Cup – the senior men’s championship.

“After a year of limited lacrosse opportunities, we realize this decision will be difficult to hear for many in our lacrosse community,” said Shawn Williams, Lacrosse Canada President. “The health and safety of our players and everyone involved in lacrosse remain our top priorities. We look forward to 2022 when our lacrosse family can safely be united from across the country for National Championships.”

In a statement issued by Lacrosse Canada, the organization said: “Lacrosse Canada would like to clarify that this decision is not a cancellation of the lacrosse season in Canada. With return-to-play or return-to-activity at different stages across the country, Lacrosse Canada’s member association will decide the 2021 lacrosse opportunities based on the provincial and health authority guidance.”

Local the TNT Renegades Lacrosse Club hasn’t issued any statements since March 10.

The Renegades are waiting to see how things shake out over the next few weeks to see if they can get some action in this summer.
