Tottenham’s Greater Metro Hockey League team, the Tottenham Railers, is now playing home games in Newmarket for the 2023/24 season.
They were forced to move their home venue to Ray Twinney Complex in Newmarket when they couldn’t get regular ice time at the Tottenham Community Centre.
With the closure of the Beeton arena, minor hockey from the community has moved to Tottenham for this season. The Beeton arena was closed due to structural issues and was deemed unsafe for hockey to be played there until those issues are addressed and corrected.
“One of the four ice pads in New Tecumseth was declared unfit for use due to roofing issues,” explained Beth Prock, team financial director and part owner. “Minor hockey is important and we want to support this fantastic activity for the kids in our community. Although Tottenham is our home, we have moved our home games to the Ray Twinney Complex Rink 2. It’s not ideal but it was best for our community. We agreed to move to Newmarket for the season.”
The Railers are currently in fourth place in the South Division of the Greater Metro Hockey League with a 7-7 record.
“My son and I took over the team in the spring following some trouble with the previous owner,” Beth explained. “There were reputation and financial issues to overcome. Despite the struggles, the team is doing well. We are in fourth place in our division and believe we can move to the top. We do have a couple of games that are not played in the Ray Twinney complex. On December 3, we will be hosting the Niagara Predators at the Magna Centre on Olympic sized ice. On February 2, 2024, we will be hosting the division leading North York Renegades. We are committed to our community, so we provide an affordable PA Day activity on February 2. Students and seniors are free. Adults are half-price with their kids.”
The Railers’ next home game is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 16, at 7:45 p.m.
