A huge first period set the tone for Friday’s game between the Alliston Hornets and the Huntsville Otters at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Jan. 30.
The Hornets hit the back of the Otters’ net at 4:23 into the period to open the scoring on a goal from Ben Smith.
Two more goals, two minutes apart from Gunner Kirk and Hunter Martell, gave the Hornets a 3-0 lead at the halfway mark in the first period.
Jacob English got the fourth goal of the night at 14:37 into the frame.
The final Hornets goal for the first period came on an unassisted effort by Mark Coish.
Huntsville scored its only goal of the night late in the period.
The second period saw two more Hornets goals from Nick Lamont and Duncan Grube to give the Alliston squad a 7-1 lead with one period remaining.
The final frame saw Noah Cochrane score to cap off the night, and the Hornets left the ice with an 8-1 win.
Alliston dropped to second place in the North Carruthers Division of the Provincial Junior Hockey League after Stayner picked up some points on a
couple of weekend wins. The Hornets have 54 points and are now one point behind the Siskins.
The Siskins have a 28-9 record, including one overtime loss, and will be looking for a few wins as the regular season comes to a close.
In third place, the Orillia Terriers are having a good season with a 23-10 record, including one overtime loss and one shootout loss, good for 48 points.
The Penetang Kings are in fourth place and can’t be counted out. With 46 points, the Kings have a respectable 21-13 record, including three overtime losses and one shoot-out loss.
The Midland Flyers are 19 points behind and in fifth place. They are followed by the Muskoka Bears, Innisfil Spartans, and the Huntsville Otters.
As of Feb. 5, the Hornets have five games left on the regular season schedule.
The Hornets will be back on home ice at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Friday, Feb. 6, to host the Innisfil Spartans.
