There was a heavy police presence in Angus over a couple of days as the Nottawasaga OPP investigated the theft of a police-issued firearm from a police vehicle.

The investigation took place in the Brentwood Road area of Angus.

The firearm, a police issued Colt C8 rifle, was stolen from a police vehicle on the weekend, and a press release was issued by OPP on Feb. 4.

The OPP said the firearm posed a risk to public safety and encouraged residents to exercise caution. Residents were advised to call 9-1-1 to report suspicious activity or if they knew anything about the firearm, and to not approach an individual who may be involved.

Members of the public were advised to avoid Brentwood Road while the search was continued, and the investigation remained ongoing.

Police said to expect a large police presence in the area while the investigation continued.

No information was provided on how the firearm was stolen.

A Colt C8 rifle is a military style assault rifle.

On Monday, Feb. 5, police issued a follow-up release announcing they had recovered the stolen police-issued Colt C8 rifle.

The investigation into the circumstances of the stolen firearm remains ongoing, and more information will be released when it becomes available.
