It is a place that offers dignity, comfort, respect, and support for people experiencing a life-limiting illness and their families.

Matthews House Hospice is dedicated to making a person’s final time one that means they are surrounded by compassion and family.

Keeping the hospice up and running requires the help of many volunteers. There are so many tasks that need to be done daily. The volunteers truly are the backbone of Matthews House.

The hospice hosted a Community of Champions Barbecue on Thursday, June 18, to recognize its volunteers, although inclement weather forced the celebration indoors so everyone could stay dry and out of strong winds.

“Typically, we’ve had celebrations for three groups of stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, and we recognized our sponsors and donors,” explained Mandy McCurdy, executive director of the Mathews House Hospice Foundation.

“This year we wanted to bring all three groups together to create a real sense of community and to have people interacting with each other. We are appreciating the entire community that has its arms around Matthews House, including staff, sponsors, donors, and volunteers.”

There are around 200 volunteers who donate their time and skills to Matthews House Hospice. All volunteers must complete required training.

“Our volunteers do anything and everything,” McCurdy explained. “We have volunteers in the kitchen, we have volunteers who maintain our gardens, and volunteers who support patients in the residential wing and go in a sit bedside and talk to individuals. We form committees for our four signature events. Those include our gala which is in October, our golf tournament, our hike which is in May, and the annual holiday giving campaign at Christmas.”

The gathering offered an opportunity to thank volunteers and supporters for their hard work and contributions.
