St. John’s United Church in Alliston hosted its 50th Potato Pancake Breakfast on Aug. 9, as one of the events in the popular Alliston Potato Festival.
The pancake breakfast started in 1973 along with the Potato Festival; however, due to COVID, all activities were suspended for two years.
The breakfast began on Saturday morning when volunteers started placing tables and chairs in the parking lot, got the grills up and running, mixed the pancake batter, filled the coffee urns, and got the juice boxes and other condiments in place for an early morning start.
Tickets went on sale at 7:30 a.m.
There was a steady line of customers all morning, and by 10 a.m., the breakfast was sold out of pancake mix.
A total of 1,073 were sold.
The event had a lot of support from volunteers from both the church congregation and other organizations.
Members of the 4-H club and their supervisors, as well as high school volunteers, did a great job keeping things running smoothly.
Organizers thank the volunteers for their help and youthful enthusiasm.
Like many churches, the congregation has many older members, and it would be difficult to host the event without the volunteers.
The St. John’s United Church pancake breakfast is an important part of the Potato Festival and has become an annual tradition.
Proceeds from the Pancake Breakfast will be donated to charitable causes in the community.
