Arenas are now open for recreational skating and shinny hockey

December 2, 2021   ·   0 Comments

The skating arenas at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre and the Tottenham Community Centre are now open for various skating activities.

The arenas are currently available four days a week from recreational skating and shinny hockey.

Recreational skates are split into groups including adult and child, adult, and older adult.

There are also several slots open each week for shinny hockey. Shinny is in an informal game; however, players must be suited up with a helmet, hockey gloves, and a stick to take part in any game.

For recreational skating and shinny, anyone that wants to attend must reserve their spot in advance as there are limits as to the number of people who will be allowed on the ice at one time.

All activities are intended to be Recreational Play: they are self-directed and geared for beginners or those who want to practice for fun in a social atmosphere and/or to work on skill development.

There is to be no organized coaching during any scheduled recreational ice time.

In keeping with current rules, anyone wanting to take part in on-ice activity at local arenas must provide proof of double COVID vaccination and as well as provide a photo id.

Children nine years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult 14 years of age or older.

You can also book a facility for a private function by contacting the Parks and Rec department at the town.

The Town’s outdoor ice rinks are not yet open. As they require a specific outdoor temperature to remain viable, the outdoor rinks will be dependant on weather conditions for they will start receiving ice.

The outdoor rinks are expected to open sometime in December.

The same protocols from last year will apply with a limited number of people allowed on the outdoor rinks at one time.

People will be allowed on the outdoor rinks on a first-come, first-serve basis.
