People have definitely been looking for something different, and that explains why Wela’s Kitchen has been selling out every week at the Tottenham Artisan and Farmer’s Market.
Wela’s Kitchen serves empanadas, churros, chimichurri, and other Argentinian favourites and has been a big hit since attending the Market in Tottenham.
“Wela is a slang for grandma, [in Spanish] which is my mom,” explained Sabrina Balinas, who brings Wela’s Kitchen to the market. “It’s spelled Abuela, but my nephew and nieces couldn’t pronounce Abuela so they started calling her Wela. These are her recipes, and my great grandmother’s recipes from Argentina. Me and my sister started doing this last year in March. We started selling from home, and people suggested we go to our local market. We signed up for it and it was a hit, and people started asking us to come to different [markets].”
This type of food is a tradition in several countries, including Mexico, Portugal, Argentina, and Spain, but each region puts their own spin on it, so it is different depending on where in the world you order it.
“People use different fillings and everyone has a different way of making them,” Sabrina said. “It’s a traditional food in Argentina, but Argentina is very big, and churros are made very sweet, especially the ones with caramel inside.”
Empanadas come in ricotta cheese and spinach, beef, chicken, ham and cheese and a new version called margarita.
Wela’s Kitchen has become an absolute favourite at the market and other markets they have been set up at. Since coming to Tottenham, they have been selling out quickly, and people are lining up to place an order.
You can follow along with Wela’s Kitchen on Facebook and Instagram to learn where they will be appearing.
After taking a week off to attend a large festival in Georgina by invitation, they will be back at the Tottenham Market the third week in August.
