Hornets in fourth place after loss to Stayner

February 24, 2022   ·   0 Comments

The Alliston Junior C Hornets have dropped to fourth place in the Carruthers Division of the PJHL, but not by much.

Only three points separate the second, third and fourth place teams.

The Stayner Siskins are still on top – six points ahead of the second place Schomberg Cougars.

The Hornets hosted the Siskins on Friday night at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre.

It didn’t take long for the Hornets to score. They were on a powerplay to start the game after Stayner received a “delay of game” penalty during the warm up.

Nathan Smilsky scored just 50 seconds into the first period.

The game was tied in the second period at two.

Stayner got the edge in the third and left the ice with a 3-2 win.

“We knew we had to get a quick start with these guys; they’re a good team,” said Hornets forward Smilsky after the game. “We’ve had trouble with them before. We knew we had to get that first goal on that powerplay chance with them getting a penalty in the warm-up. We rolled out flat in the second period. It put us back a bit, then we had some penalty trouble which kind of put us back in the second period, our legs got tired and they got on top of us.”

The Hornets had a four-minute power play after Stayner took a spearing penalty but they weren’t able to capitalize on the situation.

“We need to score on those,” Smilsky said. “We have to score on those. We should have scored but we took out time with the puck and didn’t get enough shots on net. We have to shoot more.”

With four games left on the regular season schedule the Hornets have 35 points – tied with the Orillia Terriers and two points behind the Schomberg Cougars.

The Hornets will be up against the Siskins again this week when they travel to Stayer on Thursday, February 24.

They then travel to Midland to take on the Flyers the following night, Friday, February 25.

They will return to home ice at the NTRC on Wednesday, March 2, to host the Penetang Kings.

Game time is 8:00 p.m.
