It was somewhat of a homecoming for Russell DeCarle when he performed to a packed house at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Beeton on Friday, Sept. 27.

When promoter George Scott asked the crowd how many people in the audience remembered the King City Slickers – DeCarle’s first band – many of the people in the audience raised their hands.

In his younger days, Russell played at many well-known venues in the region.

“I started playing in Tottenham Hotel with the King City Slickers,” Russell recalled. “We played in the basement there, around 1970-71. We also played at the Loretto Tavern and the Windsor House in Alliston, as well as the Muddy Water, which was then called the Beetonia – we played in the Beehive Lounge. I am excited to be coming back to Beeton. I always enjoyed playing for audiences in the area and hope to see some familiar faces in the crowd.”

Many people remember Russell from his days as lead singer with the popular band, Prairie Oyster. Prairie Oyster hasn’t performed as a band since 2011, however, Russell never stopped performing.

Friday’s concert featured various tunes, many coming from Russell’s most recent album, Alone in this Crowd.

For this performance, Russell was joined on stage by Russ Boswell on bass, and Steve Briggs on guitar.

Briggs is a gifted guitarist who really filled in the songs during the performance.

While he played many of his own songs, Russell also threw in a few obscure cover tunes.

With the event being a sell-out, promoter George Scott said he is hoping to turn the Beeton concert into an annual event.
