The Alliston & District Humane Society has announced the launch of its Second Chances: Shelter Expansion Capital Campaign with a goal of doubling the size of the shelter.

As the region’s only ‘no kill’ shelter, there are only so many animals the shelter can accommodate, and it has found itself in the position of turning away animals in need due to lack of space.

The shelter is seeking the community’s continued support.

Due to an increase in the number of animals being surrendered, lost, or abandoned, the shelter is seeing over 1,000 dogs, cats, and small animals each year. Many pet owners are abandoned because owners don’t have time for them, the financial resources to care for them, or the animal has medical or behavioural issues.

“Our building has served us well, but we outgrew it years ago and we need to grow for the future,” said Jane Clarke, president of the Alliston & District Humane Society. “Together, we can save animal’s lives. Please help us build a bigger, better, and brighter shelter for the animals by supporting our capital campaign today.”

As of May 2023, dog intakes at the shelter have increased 400 per cent over the previous year. Cats arrive at the shelter on a regular basis. The shelter helped over 400 cats in 2022 and has exceeded that number for 2023.

There are more rabbits in foster homes than can be cared for at the shelter.

Surrendered animals are on a waiting list, and foster homes are at maximum capacity.

Due to the number of animals arriving, public space and the board room are full of animals, and the shelter can no longer offer its public education programs.

The shelter is hoping to raise $4 million through this new campaign for expansion. There has already been $1.5 million that was donated through a legacy gift. With the community’s support, they hope to raise the additional $2.5 million needed to build a major expansion and renovate the current facility.

There are many custom naming and sponsorship opportunities available.
