The Alliston Hornets remain two points ahead of the Stayner Siskins in the North Carruthers Division of the Provincial Junior Hockey League after both teams won their weekend games.
The Hornets’ weekend game against the Midland Flyers, on Saturday, Feb. 10, on Flyers home ice turned into a disaster – both for the Midland team and the sport in general when the Hornets left the ice with a 22-4 win.
For some reason, the Flyers put a call-up goalie in the net who wasn’t very qualified to play Junior hockey and left him in for the entire game. It is not known if their regular starter was injured or why the Midland coaching staff made this decision.
The result was 13 different Hornets players getting goals for the night.
“It’s not something we wanted to be a part of, you don’t want a game to end up like that we did what we could to not embarrass anyone, but unfortunately the game ended up the way it did,” said Hornets general manager Travis Chapman.
The Hornets were leading 6-1 at the end of the first period.
By the end of the second, they were ahead 13-3. The final frame saw the Alliston team score nine unanswered goals.
After the weekend the Hornets are in first place followed by the Siksins in the second spot.
The Orillia Terriers remain in third place with 53 points, followed by the Schomberg Cougars in fourth with 51 points.
The Hornets will have two road games this coming weekend when they meet the Innisfil Spartans and the Caledon Golden Hawks.
One of the biggest games of the season will take place on the Family Day holiday, when the Stayner Siskins come to Alliston for an afternoon game on Monday, Feb. 19.
That game will get underway at 2:00 p.m.
