The Alliston Hornets lost on the road Thursday, Dec. 8, but rebounded with two points after a win at home the following night.

Travelling to Stayner on Thursday, the Hornets were up against the first-place Siskins for the third time this season. Alliston lost the first two games.

At the end of the first period, the game was tied at one.

That’s all the Hornets could do for the night.

The Siskins picked up two more in the second period and held on for the 3-1 win.

Alliston’s only goal for the night came from Mark Coish.

“The first period we played well, played as a team,” said Hornets forward Andrew Maltby. “The last two periods just lost our mojo – we just couldn’t find anything.”

The team returned to the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre the following night for a Friday night home game against the Innisfil Spartans.

The Hornets came out on top but it wasn’t an easy win.

Ben Taylor scored the night opener.

Innisfil tied it up late in the first period.

The Spartans had the only goal in the second period when they scored with just over a minute left on the clock to lead 2-1 going into the final period.

Innisfil scored early in the period.

Alliston’s Ben Taylor notched one at the 4:38 mark, followed by goals from Adam Hoppe and Jack Micone.

Late in the period, the Spartans scored to make it a 4-4 game.

With no scoring in the remainder of the period, the teams returned for overtime.

The Hornets took the win when Andrew Maltby scored just 15 seconds into the overtime period.

“In the first period it was back and forth, grinding through, but couldn’t find the back of the net,” Malty said after the game. “We were overthinking the tough game from last night, and we knew it was ‘must win’ tonight. I think the boys got a little too loose, but we battled through adversity.”

After the weekend, the Hornets are holding on to second place with 35 points.

The Stayner Siskins are in first with 40 points and a single loss after 21 times on the ice.

The Hornets will be on the road this coming weekend with games in Penetang and Caledon.

They return to home ice on Friday, Dec.23, to host the Schomberg Cougars.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
