With hot weather approaching during the coming summer months, you should be aware of fire bans that may be imposed at both the local and provincial levels.
When outdoor conditions become extremely dry, there is an increased fire risk that could potentially lead to disaster. Any type of uncontrolled fire is a risk to property and life.
Municipalities may impose fire bans at the local level. Inside a fire region, both a municipal fire ban and a ministry order can be in place on the same piece of land at the same time.
If a ministry or local ban is lifted, the other ban could remain in place and continue to restrict the use of outdoor fires. It is important to check with your local municipality or local municipal fire department for any local fire bans or restrictions on outdoor burning in your area.
When a Restricted Fire Zone order is in place by the province, there will be red and green signs posted along roadways, camping spots, in sports lodges, gas stations and stores around the affected area.
Announcements are also made in local newspapers, radio, and television.
Locally, the municipality will issue fire risk rating information during the summer months.
If the risk is high, there may be a ban on outdoor fires issued.
It is up to residents to be aware of any fire bans in place and to follow the order to avoid a disaster by having a fire spread to other structures, endangering property and lives.
