A Brampton man who was driving a car that collided with a train on the 5th Line near Tottenham on the night of October 14, 2021, has been handed a three-year prison sentence and given a lifetime driving ban.
Two women, ages 19 and 24, were killed, and three others, including the driver who has now been convicted, were seriously injured in the crash.
The women were temporary workers at a nearby auto parts manufacturer and were arriving for the night shift.
Jarmanjeet Singh, 30, of Brampton, was initially charged with criminal negligence causing death, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, obstruction of justice, and failing to stop at a rail crossing.
Police said the crossing signals were in working order and flashing at the time of the collision.
One of the passengers in the vehicle told the court she lost her sister in the crash. The victim also said she suffered a brain bleed, collapsed lung, and a damaged spine, ankle, and pelvis.
Her sister, who died, had only been in Canada for 45 days.
The train conductor also testified, saying she had been ‘traumatized’ by the incident.
As part of his guilty plea, Singh admitted to being behind the wheel during the 11 p.m. crash.
Singh fled to the United States to avoid prosecution.
He was tracked down by the OPP with help from U.S. Border Protection officers and prosecuted.
