As the warmer weather continues across Ontario, the dry conditions have moved the fire danger rating for New Tecumseth to ‘extreme.’

The rating moved from ‘moderate’ to ‘high’ in mid-July, and as conditions have remained dry, the danger of fire has increased.

Of the 19 municipalities in Simcoe County, 10 of them now have a fire danger rating of ‘extreme,’ as of July 30. Four others have a rating of ‘high,’ and five have a rating of ‘moderate.’

A rating of ‘high’ means fires can start easily from small sources like grass and debris, and can spread rapidly. This is especially dangerous when conditions are windy.

A rating of extreme means a fire can easily start and rapidly spread.

There is now a fire ban in effect in the Town of New Tecumseth. This is a total open-air burning ban.

All forms of open-air burning, regardless of existing permits, are now prohibited.

The fire ban includes fireworks, cooking fires and any coal, charcoal, wood, or woodchip-fueled barbecue devices.

Residents should keep up to date on announcements from the New Tecumseth Fire Department.

The fire chief may declare an Open Air Burning Ban at any time when, in the opinion of the fire chief or their designate, it is in the best interest of public safety.
