It was more like a soccer score than the end of a football game when the TNT Express Varsity team went to Orangeville to take on the Outlaws on Sunday, July 10.
After playing four full quarters, the Express left the field with a 1-0 win after gaining the only point of the game on a rouge during an attempted field goal in the third quarter.
For some reason these two teams have had very little success in scoring against each other this year.
The first game of the season saw the Orangeville team take an 11-3 win. They second time they met, the Express left with a 10-0 win.
Sunday’s game saw both teams stuck at mid field with little movement for the entire first quarter.
The Express had some success in the second quarter when Matthew Wadge received a pass that resulted in a first down for TNT. They couldn’t follow up and the ball was turned over to Orangeville on downs.
Denver Ross had one of the big hits of the game when he crashed through the O-ville line to drop the Outlaws quarterback.
Keeping the Outlaws pinned at mid field, the Express got the ball back on the 57 yard line.
At the end of the first half the game was scoreless.
The second half had both teams coming out to try to break the stalemate.
TNT’s Justin DeFaria made some good gains on a nice run followed by a pass to Steven Noble that brought the Express down field.
The Express made it to the 20 yard line on a fake and run by Brian Escott, but again the Express were held at the line.
The fourth quarter saw the Express make it to the 14 yard line then to the eighth on a run by DeFaria.
The Express decided to go for the field goal, but after kicking wide and missing the points, the Outlaws got caught in their end zone for the only point of the game.
Both teams attempted field goals late in the game to try to get the needed points to win but the Express attempt went wide and the Orangeville attempt was blocked.
The Express left the field with the 1-0 win.
The Express will be in Cambridge for their final game of the regular season on Friday, July 22, to take on the Lions. Game time is 8 p.m.
