Farmer’s Market Spotlight: Lovin Little Gems

The gems come from all over the world and are turned into beautiful works of art by Janita Robbins, of Lovin Little Gems.

Janita brings her quality pieces of jewellery to the Alliston Rurban Farmer’s Market every Saturday.

She takes semi-precious stones and crystals that are mined in various places around the world and creates one-of-a-kind jewellery that is on display for visitors.

Janita has been making the jewellery for seven years but she was introduced to it by her father when she was a child. She is very knowledgeable of the different crystals and gems from where they come from to which type of gemstone they are.

She sources her gems from places around the world that are known to have unique deposits.

“I set off all the bells at customs when coming to Canada,” she explained of how the lead content in many gems will activate a metal detector.

The customs agents, she said, were relieved when they found only gemstones!

Janita drills the tiny holes in the stones from which she threads the chain or earring hoop.

“You have a diamond head drill with a dremel and it has to be drilled under water,” Janita explained. “If you didn’t have water the stone would shatter like glass. You’re cooling the drill down and cooling the stone down. When I do jade, it can take an hour to an hour and a-half to one stone. I hand pick every crystal.”

While every stone in her collection is unique and valuable she has some that are very rare.

She showed a pendant made from moldavite – a silica projectile rock created by a meteorite impact around 15 million years ago.
“I’ve got a super-seven,” she said. “It’s seven crystals in one. It’s phenomenal, and I could never replace it. You have to be a crystal lover to understand the power of crystals.”

Janita’s collection available at the Farmer’s Market are all unique and one-of-a-kind pieces that you won’t find anywhere else.

She is at the Alliston Rurban Farmer’s Market every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
