Members of Grandmothers Embrace South Simcoe – the local chapter of the international association Grandmothers Embrace, founded in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation – will host their annual Jewellery, Scarf & Purse Sale at St. John’s United Church on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
This popular, one-day, cash only event, features donated jewellery and accessories sold at reasonable prices, with full proceeds to raise awareness and funds to improve the lives of African Grandmothers and grandchildren battling the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS.
“We are all set to rollout the jewellery, scarves and purses for sale,” Alliston Grannie Mary Abernethy told The Times. “People kept donating even when they knew we couldn’t have our event while there were COVID–19 restrictions. It wouldn’t be the same if we tried to enforce distancing or even control the numbers in Shilton Hall [so we waited until now to host the next one].”
Abernethy said raising funds through events such as the Jewellery Sale is more important than ever, as many corporate donors have transferred their support to other areas.
“We have a couple of new displays this year,” Abernethy hinted. “Including a collection of new jewellery that might suit a cruise or sunny beach, and another of Indigenous and African inspired pieces. Get a head start on your Christmas shopping!”
