The Alliston Hornets are one game away from winning their best-of-seven quarter-final playoff series against the Penetang Kings.
The Hornets left the ice with a 5-1 win in Game Three on Sunday night, March 13, on home ice at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre.
The Hornets won Game One of the series by a score of 3-2, on Wednesday, March 9, in Alliston.
They travelled to Penetang on Friday, 11, and squeezed out a 2-1 win to take a two-game lead.
Sunday’s game got off to a bit of a slow start.
Ben Taylor got the opening goal as 12:22 into the first period to put the Hornets on the scoreboard.
Alliston forward Ben Beausaert got the second Alliston goal midway through second frame.
The Kings got on the scoreboard late in the second to make it a 2-1 game.
The Hornets pulled ahead on a goal from Cole Turcotte at 17:20 into the period.
Going into the final 20 minutes, the Hornets kept up the pressure and Duncan Grube scored a pair just under four minutes apart to give the Hornets the win.
“It was good effort from everybody even though we were a little tired after the last two games,” said Hornets forward Ben Beausaert after the game. “We controlled the pace of the game and you could tell that by the shots on net at the end of the game. I think we came out flying and controlled the game and they shut down – that’s what we have to do every game.”
With three games behind them, Beausaert said they can’t sit back going into Game Four.
“We won those games because we’ve been the better team in all three of them. But, that being said, we play one game at a time and you can’t start thinking you’ve got the series in your hand because if you still have to win one to win the series. We still need one more game so we’re going to show up on Wednesday, and hopefully get the job done.”
Game Four of the series took place on Wednesday, March 16, with results not available at press time.
In the other playoff series, as of the weekend, the Stayner Siskins are leading the Huntsville Otters 3-0.
The Schomberg Cougars are leading 2-1 over the Caledon Golden Hawks.
The Orillia Terriers are leading their series 3-0 over the Midland Flyers.
If the Hornets fail to win on Wednesday in Penetang, the series will return to Alliston for Game Five on Friday, March 18.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
