If you’re down three goals in the third period the last thing you want to do is get a penalty.
That’s what happened Friday night at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre when the Midland Flyers took penalties for fighting, instigating, aggressor, and a misconduct all in one shot after a Midland player went after a Hornets player who decided not to get involved.
The result was a full nine minute power play that pretty much ripped Midland’s chances of getting back in the game.
The Hornets skated circles around the Flyers and notched four third-period goals to end the game.
It wasn’t like the Flyers had much of a chance anyway after the Alliston team scored five unanswered goals in the first period.
Hornets Drake Board and Devon Gillham each scored two first period goals – one of Board’s was a shorthanded effort.
Brandon Washer scored late in the frame to make it a 5-0 game.
Returning for the second period, the Hornets made easy work of the ice and gave up little to the Flyers.
The only goal in the period came from Midland’s Patrick Brown who put the Flyers on the scoreboard.
Midland opened the third period with a second goal, but when the buzzer sounded the Hornets had scored four more – three of them on power plays to end the game 9-2.
The Flyers came to Alliston as a fourth place team with a decent 10-15 record and are capable of doing a much better job than they did on the ice Friday night.
“I think when this club gets up a couple of goals we start to let up – we’re getting better at that as we move forward,” said Hornets goalie Chase Krompocker of how the Hornets eased up in the second period. “The first two periods were a little more busy, the third period was pretty tough. There were only two shots behind us in the first two periods,” he said of his work in goal during the game. “We’ve played them a couple of times so we knew what to expect and got we got pretty much what we expected.”
The Hornets won’t have a home game this Friday. Instead they will be in Midland for a road game.
They return to home ice on Friday, Dec. 16, to host the Orillia Terriers. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
