If you are 16 years old, you can apply for a motorcycle license in Ontario.
As a new rider, you will need to practice riding and gain experience over time.
To ride on Ontario roads, you must always carry a valid driver’s license, wear an approved helmet, and have a valid owner’s permit, license plate, and insurance.
Riding a motorcycle requires an M Class license. The type of license you get will depend on the type of motorcycle you want to ride.
There are three main types of motorcycle licenses. These include M Class for full-speed motorcycles, M with Condition L for mopeds and motorized scooters (also called ‘limited-speed’ motorcycles, and
M with Condition M for three-wheeled motorcycles.
To apply for a motorcycle license in Ontario, you must be at least 16 years old, pass an eye test, and pass a written test about the rules of the road and traffic signs.
Once you pass these tests, you get an M1 License. You will be considered a beginner and need to practice riding and gain experience over time.
To apply and take the required tests, you must visit a DriveTest centre.
Motorcycles come with graduated licensing. After you pass your eye and written tests, you get an M1 license. Later, you can get an M2 license. Before you get a full M license, you have to finish two learning levels and pass two road tests.
Once you get your M2 license, you have up to five years to finish the learning process. After five years, if you do not get your full license, you will need to start over. You are considered a novice driver if you have an M1, M2, M2-L, or M2-M license.
Certain conditions apply to you while you are considered a novice driver.
If you have an M1 license, you must maintain a zero blood alcohol level, ride only during daylight hours, wear an approved helmet, not drive on roads with speed limits over 80 kph, and may not carry passengers.
The next step is an M2 license that allows you to ride at night and on any road.
An M2 with condition L license allows you to ride only a moped or motorized scooter that does not go faster than 70 kph.
An M2 with condition M license means you can only ride a three-wheeled motorcycle.
