Kaisei Sushi will bring a new flavour to Tottenham

Tottenham will soon be getting its very first sushi restaurant when Kaisei Sushi opens its doors in November.

The restaurant is replacing a former coffee shop right on Queen Street.

For chef Jaeyoung Kim, opening a sushi restaurant is something he has wanted to do for quite some time.

He began learning the art as an apprentice in his native Korea, then worked his way up through the ranks becoming chef.

After moving to Canada in 2009, he worked in several sushi restaurants in Toronto, but said he prefers small town life.

“At first I worked as part of the kitchen staff,” Jaeyoung explained of learning the industry. “In Toronto I worked at sushi restaurants in the kitchen, then became an apprentice to the head sushi chef, and eventually to head chef.”

Along with his wife, Melissa, the couple have been searching for a suitable location for a while, and when the found this spot, they knew it was perfect for what they wanted to accomplish.

While sushi has a long association with Japanese culture, Mr. Kim said it is actually more from Korea than Japan. Many sushi restaurants have Japanese decorations, but are in fact run by Koreans.

When opened, the restaurant will have seating for 24 people as well as take-out. They have many fun and special ideas that will be placed on the menu.

Melissa said they are hoping to really be a part of the community when they open and look forward to meeting many local residents.

“We don’t want it to be a place where customers come in and don’t feel welcome,” she said. “We want to get to know everyone’s names. Already, since working here, we’ve already met a lot of people in Tottenham.”

The couple is now putting the interior finish on the dining room to get ready to open.

The restaurant will be open for both lunch and dinner.

Jaeyoung said he puts more than just hard work into his food.

“It comes from the heart,” he said of the effort he places in making the food and serving customers.
