Two long-serving local politicians gave their farewell at New Tecumseth Town Council’s final meeting of the 2018-2022 term, held on Oct. 3.
Mayor Rick Milne, and Coun. Fran Sainsbury, decided not to run in the upcoming Oct. 24 municipal election.
Mayor Milne has had a long history in local politics beginning in 1984 when he was elected to the office of mayor in the former Town of Alliston. After amalgamation in 1991, he became the interim mayor of the newly formed Town of New Tecumseth.
He returned as mayor from 1995 to 1997.
After being elected deputy mayor of New Tecumseth, he remained in the position until elected as mayor in 2014.
“As I prepare to leave the office of Mayor of New Tecumseth, I reflect on the past 30-some years with a sense of pride of the accomplishments that have brought us to where we are today,” Milne said in his final address to council. “I’d like to thank the citizens of the great town of New Tecumseth for their confidence in me, to elect and re-elect me eight times over the course of my 30 years. It was always my goal to leave the town a better place than when I first came into office. To the current and past council members, I want to thank all of you, for you service to the citizen of the Town of New Tecumseth.”
Mayor Milne said it was a difficult decision to not run again, but he is prepared to enter “the next chapter” of his life.
Coun. Sainsbury has served on municipal councils for 27 years, beginning when she was a councillor of the Town of Whitchurch–Stouffville, then served as mayor of that town for nine years.
She also served as Mayor of Clearview from 2003 to 2006.
She announced earlier this year that she would not be seeking re-election.
Councillor Sainsbury represents Ward 4.
