Giving Tuesday is a relatively recent event that rolled off the back of Black Friday, and gives charitable organizations a special day to ask the public for help in funding valuable projects.

The day has been observed by many charitable and non-profit organizations across the country. It started in the U.S. as a way to have people give back after the buying frenzy of Black Friday, and has since moved to Canada as well.

The Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF) was present at the Zehrs grocery store in Alliston on Tuesday, Nov. 29, to ask for donations for their ‘Because of you, we can’ capital campaign.

The campaign is raising funds for the redevelopment of the hospital as well as for much-needed hospital equipment.

“Giving Tuesday is a worldwide movement,” explained Kara Harris, communications coordinator with the Hospital Foundation. “This year is the tenth anniversary for it. It’s attached to the Thanksgiving Holiday in the States, then migrated up. On Thursday, it’s Thank you Thursday where we thank all of our donors. This really does kind of kick off the ‘giving’ time of year.”

Customers at the store were very generous throughout the day.

Hospitals must raise money for most capital expenses and SMHF is the key component of that fundraising.

“Funds raised today will be going to needed equipment at the hospital,” Ms. Harris explained. “The donations we receive today are going to be matched by the Morningview Foundation. It’s very generous, and it’s a good incentive for people to donate when they know one dollar will turn into two when they donate. We have a couple of needed hospital items that are on our list. If people can’t get here today, they can always donate online at www.transformingstevenson.ca.”

The Foundation received a positive response from store visitors who understand the importance of the hospital and the need for donations to keep it operating properly.
