When the snow flies you should be prepared for what winter weather can do if you find yourself in a situation you didn’t expect.
Having a plan and emergency supplies for your home and car will help keep you safe if you find yourself stranded or without power.
You should start by clearing snow and ice from your driveway and sidewalks to avoid a slip and fall which could result in serious injury.
Living in a rural area presents extra challenges in times of snow storms – especially if you are on the road and not expecting a sudden squall or storm that covers the road.
Keeping a winter survival kit in your car will help keep you stay safe if you find yourself off the road.
The kit should include a charged phone, water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a blanket and extra clothes.
You should also have jumper cables, a shovel, traction mats or sand, candles and a lighter or matches.
During the winter months, you should check weather and road conditions before leaving home. You can avoid trouble by staying home rather than heading out when a storm is approaching.
For the home, you should develop a safety plan. This includes arranging contact with others, and neighbours.
In the house you should make sure you stock up on non-perishable food, bottled water, medications, flashlights, and a radio with extra batteries so you can access information if the power is out.
You should also have a first aid kit, candles and matches or lighter, and even a whistle to attract attention if needed.
There should be special attention given if you have babies or small children.
Have a plan ready if you need to evacuate your home. This includes clothes, shoes, sleeping bags or blankets, and other personal items you will need.
Planning ahead and being prepared for a winter emergency could mean the difference between getting through a challenging time and experiencing a disaster.
