The Banting Memorial High School Marauders senior girls AAA flag football team are champions after winning at both the district and regional final games.
The team is undefeated for the season. They won six games in the regular season, then went on to win two playoff games to earn the right to advance to the Simcoe County Athletic Association (SCAA) championship.
The SCAA championship game, held on Banting home field on Tuesday, Oct. 25, pitted the Marauders against the Bear Creek Secondary School Kodiaks. The game was scoreless after the first half as both teams put out their best effort on the field.
Banting’s Riley Cross scored a touchdown in the second half then followed up with a one point convert to give the Marauders a 7-0 lead.
They kept Bear Creek pinned in their own end for the rest of the game to win the match 7-0 and claim the SCAA title.
“We had some strong running plays, and we couldn’t have done it without our coaches,” Riley said after the game. “We were changing plays on the fly, changing our defence on the fly. Adaptability, overall played a big role in our game play. The team has a great attitude, they’re awesome girls, we came together as a team. Our defence really came through. We had a short bench during this game as well. We had a lot of players playing on both offence and defence.”
The win gave the Marauders the right to go to the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association (GBSSA) championship which pitted the championship Catholic school team against the top public school team in the region.
The final GBSSA game took place in Barrie against St. Peter’s Catholic Secondary School.
The Marauders left the field with a 14-7 win to claim the regional title.
