After several years of raising funds for local charities, the 100 Women Who Care New Tecumseth chapter is ceasing operations.
Citing dwindling numbers due to the pandemic, and now a recession, organizers decided it was time to close.
100 Women Who Care is a movement that started in Michigan in 2006. The concept was that each chapter or group of 100 women would gather for just one hour, each with $100 to give.
A local charity or non-profit is then chosen to receive $10,000.
The movement quickly spread across North America.
During meetings, approved charities can make their case as to why they deserve a donation. The group then decides, by vote, which charity they should support.
They give away 100 per cent of the proceeds raised. Although they don’t always have 100 women involved, the process is still the same and the funds raised are donated.
At most meetings, charities that previously received donations will explain how the funds have been used.
During 2021, the group helped fund CAMH York/Simcoe MOBYSS Project, Candlelighters Simcoe, Matthew’s House Camp Chysalis, and YouthReach.
The local chapter of 100 Women Who Care raised almost $45,000 for local charitable groups.
“We are incredibly proud of each of our successes and encourage all of our members to continue to find opportunities to champion and sponsor those in need,” the group said in a statement announcing they were disbanding.
