When you think of Canadian wine, most people look to the Niagara fruit belt and its popular estate wineries.
However, Adamo Estate Winery in Mono provides a wide variety of wines, all produced at its location on a hilltop in Hockley Valley.
The winery produces around 30 different types of wine, and they bring their offerings to the Tottenham Artisan and Farmer’s Market every Sunday.
The winery is relatively new, having been started in 2014.
Mario Adamo, former owner of the Hockley Valley resort, started the winery as an addition to the resort business.
“It’s been a passion project for Mario Adamo who took over the Hockley Valley Resort in 1985,” explained David Marshall, special events coordinator for the winery. “He started by planting some vines at the bottom of the hill at the entrance to the resort.”
The region has little grape growing, but the winery has been successful, banking on the fact that the climate is very close to the escarpment-sheltered area of Niagara.
“We will grow hearty varieties like Chardonnay, Riesling, Chardonnay Musque, and Pinot Noir – those will really take the weather well,” David explained. “We do have varieties from our vineyard; we also have growing partners in Niagara and Prince Edward County that we buy grapes from. They come to us a full cluster, and we make the wine from scratch.”
The winery makes different versions of its wine with subtle differences that people like depending on their taste preferences.
“We make four or five different Chardonnays,” David explained. “We’ll have one that is a stronger oak and it comes from a certain grower in the Niagara Region.”
Each bottle of wine will have the region and grower’s name on its label.
David brought several types of wine to the Artisan and Farmer’s Market.
Visitors can sample different wines to help them decide what they’d like when making a purchase.
