Canadian Forces Base Borden hosted its biennial Canadian Armed Forces Day and Air Show June 11 and 12.
The event honoured the 100th anniversary of the base, and the 72nd anniversary of D-Day with an amazing air show, and numerous ground displays.
It was all eyes on the sky with performances by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds (431 Air Demonstration Squadron – Moose Jaw) and the CF-18 Hornet Fighter Jet (CFB Cold Lake), and history buffs got their fill with an awesome array of aircraft to explore ground side, from the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, including a CF-18 Hornet Fighter, CT-114 Tutor Jet, and CH-146 Griffon Helicopter.
Ground displays were run by the nine military schools and included a Forward Operating Base – Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers School; Kiddie Commando Course – Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers School; Jaws of Life Demonstration – Canadian Forces Fire and CBRN Academy; High Risk Vehicle Stop – Canadian Forces Military Police Academy; 400 Sqn Pipes and Drums, Cadet and Base Borden Volunteer Bands; Royal Canadian Air Force Jet Stream Bandand; and a field chapel in addition to an extensive display of army vehicles.
Additional performances by SkyHawks (Canadian Forces Parachute Team); Griffon Helicopter (400 Tactical Helicopter Squadron); Canadian Harvard Aerobatic Team (CHAT); Waterloo Warbirds – de Havilland DH-115 Vampire Mk 55; Jacquie B Airshows – Extra 300 Extreme Aerobatics; RCAF Beech 18; Westland Lysander; Gord Price – Yak-50; Murray Kot – 1956 Cessna L-19E Birddog; Manfred Radius – Sailplane Aerobatics; and Trevor Refferty – The Javelin – Canadian Stunt Pilot – Aerobatics, rounded out the weekend.
The event drew thousands of attendees to the base during the two-day event, and for many it was their first taste of the awesome power war craft in action.
