The Alliston Hornets are in first place in the Carruthers Division of the PJHL after a decisive win over the Stayner Siskins on Alliston home ice on Friday (Oct. 6) night at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre.
It was the first time the two rivals had met on the ice this season.
The Siskins are the defending division and conference champions.
After a scoreless first period, the Hornets came out strong in the second, scoring three goals before the Siskins could get on the scoreboard.
Alliston’s goals came from Will Millington, Josh Presley, and Tyler Kelly.
The Siskins hit the back of the Alliston net with just under a minute remaining in the second period.
Neither team could score in the final period, and the game ended with a 3-1 Alliston win.
The win places the Hornets first in the division with a 6-1 record and 12 points. Stayner is close behind with 10 points and a 5-2 record.
In third place, the Schomberg Cougars have been strong this season and have a 5-2 record.
The Huntsville Otters are in fourth place, followed by the Caledon Golden Hawks, Orillia Terriers, Penetang Kings and Midland Flyers. The Innisfil Spartans are in the basement and are still looking for their first win of the season.
Alliston and Stayner have finished at the top of the division for the past few seasons and have had a real battle between the two towns. Games between the two teams usually bring out a bigger crowd.
It’s still in the early going of the season with a lot of hockey left to play, so the standings could change dramatically as the season goes on.
The Hornets will be back on home ice on Friday, Oct. 20, to host the Caledon Golden Hawks.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
