The Alliston Hornets won their weekend home game when they hosted the Schomberg Cougars at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Friday, Sept. 22.

It was a tie game at the end of the first period, with both teams netting a single goal.

Jack Micone scored the Hornets’ first game of the night.

Alliston’s Tayden Hannivan scored early in the second period to make it a 2-1 game, but the Cougars responded, scoring two to take the lead in the final frame.

Micone got his second of the night at 2:01 into the third to again make it a tie game.

Ashton Kirwin scored three minutes later to give the Hornets a one-goal advantage.

The game was again tied when Schomberg hit the back of the net early in the period.

Micone got the hat trick and the go-ahead goal midway in the period to make it a 5-4 game.

The Hornets had minutes left to stop the Cougars from getting back into the game.

The game was sealed when Tayden Havvinan got an empty net goal with 45 seconds left on the clock for the Hornets to take the 6-4 win.

“Confidence is huge, we’re here to win, we’re not here to lose,” said Hornets head coach Dave Kelly after the game about the early season. “The bar is set high for us and we expect the boys to meet it. We are putting out system in and we expect them to follow it. We do have a lot of injuries right now, it happens, but part of the game is adversity, we were down a goal and got a couple.”

The Hornets took a 2-1 loss to the Penetang Kings in their previous game on Wednesday, Sept. 20, so they really needed to come back and take a win.

“We’ve got a lot of new guys, so it’s taking a while for them to get the system, once it’s coming and our turnovers get lower, it will get better,” Kelly said. “There are three seasons within the season – there’s the beginning, we get to November and December, and then the playoffs is a whole new season. As long as we’re at the top of the rung in the playoffs we’ll match out goal. We’ll go deep into the playoffs and be successful. We’re trying to instill as much as we can into these kids and we have a lot of confidence.”

The Hornets will be in Midland to take on the Flyers this coming weekend.

They will return to home ice at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Friday, Oct. 6, to host the Stayner Siskins.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
