Alliston Legion hosts youth public speakers

The Alliston Royal Canadian Legion Branch 171 hosted its annual public speaking competition on Sunday, February 17.  

Heard in four categories (Primary, Grades 1 to 3; Junior, Grades 4 to 6; Intermediate Grades 7 to 9; and Senior Grades 10 to 12) contestants took to the stage at the Legion hall, located at 111 Dufferin Street South, to participate in the Youth Leadership Program – providing opportunities for young people to share their talents within the community and beyond.

And the winners are:

Grades 1–3

1st Place – Melia Lastoria, St. Paul’s Catholic School, Art

2nd Place – Logan Kealty, St. Paul’s Catholic School, My Little Brother

3rd Place – Lucas Tiburcio, St. Paul’s Catholic School, Earth Ranger

Grades 4–6

1st Place – Isaac MacKenzie, Tosorontio Central Public School, Make The World A Greener Space

2nd Place – Sebastian Barrios, Holy Family Catholic School, Bullying & How It Could Lead to Death

3rd Place – Jessica Aldridge, Tosorontio Central Public School, The Ugliest and Meanest Teacher Ever

Grades 7–9

1st Place – Jenna Bowen, Ernest Cumberland Elementary School, Victim of a Cell Phone

2nd Place – Heidi Flood St. Paul’s Catholic School, Things That We Take For Granted

3rd Place – Samantha Meridiani, Holy Family Catholic School, Stress

Grades 10 – 12

1st Place – Melissa D’Amico, Banting Memorial High School, On The King of Death and The Modern World

All first place winners went on to speak at the Royal Canadian Legion Youth Public Speaking Contest “Zones”, held at the Everett Legion on Saturday, March 2.
