The Rotary Club of Alliston hosted its annual “Twelfth Night” celebration at Riverdale Park, Jan. 6. The event, also known as “Burning of the Green,” was an opportunity for local residents to come together, enjoy a 25 cent hot dog or hot chocolate, and safely dispose of their unwanted real Christmas trees. Firefighters from Station 1 Alliston lit the ceremonial bonfire and then kept careful watch over the burning pile, while children took to the icy hills for an evening of tobogganing. Throughout history, Twelfth Night is a festival in some branches of Christianity marking the coming of the Epiphany, or the day when the nativity story tells us that the wise men visited the infant Jesus. In Western Church traditions, the Twelfth Night concludes the Twelve Days of Christmas, and various cultures have developed a range of special festivities to mark the occasion.
