June is Seniors Month, and Community and Home Assistance to Seniors (CHATS) – raised its flag at the New Tecumseth Administration Centre on Tuesday, June 6, in support of seniors around the region.
CHATS supports older adults and helps them age in place at home where they are comfortable. They help seniors in York Region and South Simcoe.
“CHATS is an organization that provides support to older adults and their family care givers to enable them to be able to live in their own homes as long as possible,” explained CHATS CEO Christina Bisanz. “We do that by providing both in-home services as well as community supports – the kind of things that help people remain as independent as possible, given that they may be frail and may have moderate cognitive challenges. It’s a way to ensue people have the choice to age in place with dignity and safety.”
A considerable number of seniors in the region rely on CHATS’ services.
“CHATS serves close to 8,000 clients throughout York Region and Simcoe,” Ms. Bixanz explained. “We have a number of clients in this area [New Tecumseth] as well as Bradford West Gwillimbury, Beeton, and throughout South Simcoe. We provide transporation, Meals on Wheels, we have in-home support services, and we help people who are still living in their own homes with lawn care and snow removal – the kinds of things that sometimes force a person not to be able to manage.”
The flag raising at the Administration Centre brings awareness to what CHATS does and the fact that during Senior Citizen’s Month, it may be a good time to reach out to your senior neighbours and family to see if they need any help.
