The annual CIBC Run For A Cure, benefitting the Canadian Cancer Society – a national, community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer – took place in Alliston on Sunday, September 30, leaving from the Canadian Tire parking lot.
This year’s theme, “I promise to make breast cancer beatable”, was displayed on banners and t-shirts throughout the sea of hundreds of pink clad runners/walkers who attended.
More than 82,000 Canadians gathered in 56 different communities to take part in the Run for the Cure, raising an estimated $16.2 million for the breast cancer cause.
Funds raised in support of the 27th annual CIBC Run for the Cure will be invested by the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) in “the most promising breast cancer research as well as the country’s leading breast cancer information and support programs for people with breast cancer and their families.”
“Thanks to impactful events like the Run and passionate supporters of the breast cancer cause, investments in research have led to significant progress in breast cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment and care. Since the 1980s, breast cancer survival has increased by nearly 20 per cent,” according to CIBC.
Next year’s Run is set to take place on Sunday October 6, 2019.
Every day, 72 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
