A presentation by a local resident requesting a consideration to change the bylaw regarding backyard chicken coops resulted in some discussion during New Tecumseth Council’s July 8 meeting.

The resident asked Council to consider changing the bylaw to allow backyard chickens on a limited basis. It was suggested that it could be done as a pilot project and have licensing procedures for residents trying to raise chickens at home.

The resident readily admitted that it would be easier and cheaper to just buy eggs at the grocery store, but would like to go ahead with the project as a learning experience for his children.

Councillor Shira Harrison McIntyre said she had already researched the subject with other municipalities to see how it has worked elsewhere.

In Bradford, backyard chickens are allowed, provided that the homeowner has a minimum of 2.5 acres of land, and that property must be surrounded by agricultural land.

Both Hamilton and Peterborough started backyard chicken projects, and both projects were cancelled.

Councillor Harrison McIntyre also expressed concerns about diseases that can be carried by some birds as well as the possibility that chickens could attract other predatory animals.

Councillor Wendy Gabrek expressed concerns over noise, environmental hazards and waste, as well as how to determine how many chickens would be allowed at a residence.

She also stated concerns about the possibility of the chickens being neglected.

Councillor Marc Biss said he was concerned that chickens can carry several serious diseases. He noted that chicken farmers in Ontario are required to follow strict guidelines for healthy production and are audited on a yearly basis.

Councillor Biss cited statistics that show a single case of avian flu could be devastating to local poultry producers.

Council voted on whether to accept the motion and the motion was denied, so residents shouldn’t expect to be raising chickens in their backyard anytime soon.
