The main intersection in Tottenham has long been a concern for residents when it comes to crossing the road safely.
The intersection of Queen St. and Mill Street can pose challenges for pedestrians, especially when crossing north-south on Queen St.
Residents complain that some drivers making both left turns from the northbound lane and right turns from the southbound lane on Mill St. do so with little consideration for pedestrians crossing the road.
A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured on Jan. 20.
There have been several other incidents of pedestrians being struck by vehicles at this intersection over the past few years.
Council has already approved and scheduled a series of safety improvements at this intersection for implementation in the spring. This includes removing on-street parking to accommodate dedicated turning lanes, recalibrating traffic signals, and enhancing crosswalks.
New Tecumseth Ward 8 Councillor Andrea Jacks has submitted a written motion to council requesting that town staff explore and evaluate additional pedestrian safety measures to further improve safety at the intersection.
This includes a review of best practices for intersection safety solutions implemented in comparable municipalities, with a focus on measures that reduce pedestrian-vehicle conflicts at busy intersections.
“It’s treacherous,” said Coun. Jacks, regarding the intersection. “Three of the four corners have arcahaic design with no setbacks between the buildings and the sidewalk, which blocks sight lines, and the massive increase of traffic volume over time. It’s a complicated problem to solve.”
Also requested was that staff assess the feasibility, cost, timing, and anticipated safety benefits of any recommended measures, including those that could be implemented during work in the spring of 2026 and those that require longer-term planning.
The motion was passed unanimously.
